Com a entrada de Paulo César Caju no lugar de Gérson, que estava machucado, o Brasil enfrentou a Inglaterra pela 2ª rodada da 1ª fase da Copa de 70, num encontro entre os dois últimos campeões do mundo. No começo do jogo, aos 10 minutos, o goleiro inglês Gordon Banks evitou gol de cabeça de Pelé na maior defesa de todos os tempos na história das copas. A partida equilibrada foi decidida aos 14 minutos do segundo tempo, depois de grande jogada de Tostão, passe de Pelé e o gol de Jairzinho para garantir a vitória brasileira por 1×0.
